Synopsis


Even though both the army and the navy requested a legal framework that would give them certainty in their complementary performance in public security tasks since 2007, it was not until Andrés Manuel López Obrador arrival that the necessary legal transformations were carried out to comply with the requests of the Armed Forces. But in addition to consolidating the militarization in the security field, the president of Mexico chose to intensify a process of militarization of the entire country, assigning SEDENA (Ministry of Defense for its acronym in Spanish) and SEMAR (Ministry of the Navy for its acronym in Spanish) at least 13 new tasks that, in principle, correspond to administrative branches of the federal government and represent significant amounts of money.
